Chapter 7

‘I take it we’re going in your car,’ Birdie said to Twiggy as they left the station the following morning to visit the school.

‘We can hardly go in yours, as it’s not reliable and might break down at any moment.’ He did quote marks with his fingers.

‘Exactly. And that’s the reason I walked in today, in case Sarge saw me arrive and wanted to ask me about it.’

‘Is that why you were late this morning?’

‘I’d like to say yes, but I have to tell you, I’m not brilliant at timekeeping. I was only five minutes late and Sarge hadn’t started the briefing.’

‘My advice is you should try harder. Just because you have Sarge onside, which is a miracle, don’t bank on it lasting. You were lucky he didn’t get on to you this morning when you arrived. Our hours are flexible because of the nature of the job, but first thing in the morning, Sarge expects us there before eight-thirty.’

‘Message received and understood.’

‘Don’t you have an alarm clock?’

‘I have three, but they don’t help. But, as I said, I was still here before the briefing. Where’s your car?’

‘Over there.’ He pointed to a Ford Focus.

‘And here’s me thinking you’d have something sporty,’ she joked, knowing full well he wouldn’t.

‘Yeah, right. With my family, chance would be a fine thing. Though I wouldn’t say no to the Porsche 911 Turbo. Except they’re very low down and with the size of this’ – he patted his protruding stomach – ‘once I got in, I might never get out.’

‘Not to mention your age,’ she said, smirking.

‘Ouch. You sure know how to hurt. But, as it’s not likely to happen unless I win the lottery, then I won’t worry about it for now.’ He sighed and then grinned at her. ‘Come on, let’s go.’

The drive to the school didn’t take long and soon he turned into the entrance.

‘Fingers crossed the head teacher can help us. I take it you know them?’ Birdie said.

‘Yes, it’s Mrs Fox. She’s only been at the school for two years but she’s doing a good job. You come from around here, did you go to this school?’

‘No, I went to Robert Smyth. What about you?’

‘I went to the all boys’ school in Northampton.’

‘Did you join the force there first?’

‘No, because I didn’t fancy a busy station. Evie and I were dating at the time and as this is her neck of the woods, I applied here. I started off as a PC and then moved over to CID. This has been my only job while in the force.’

‘So, not much going on here that you don’t know about.’

‘Yep. I know most of the wrong’uns around here. What did you think of your first day yesterday? You’d gone before I had time to ask.’

‘It was good. I enjoyed it more than I thought. I wasn’t pleased about being sent to the hospital, initially, as you know. But it actually turned out well.’

Twiggy parked in the section reserved for staff in the school car park.
